Christmas decorating

I’m living in a condo again and I’ve been seeing people unloading Christmas decorations from their cars. I’m guessing they are keeping their decorations in the steel buildings which is a storage facility down the street. These condos don’t come with a whole lot of storage space.

My bedroom closet is full, which is the largest closet in the place. I’m surprised at the kitchen though.. there is more cabinets and storage than I thought it would have.. which makes me happy. There are 3 nice deep drawers and one we are using as a spice drawer. We are able to store the spices upright in the drawer because it’s so deep. We use another one of the drawers to put our boxes of trash bags and storage bags in. The other is used for our silverware, etc.

Cleaning out

Cleaning out closets and storage spaces can be daunting but it really doesn’t have to be that way. The best thing to do is to sort things into a keep, sell and donate piles. Find a place to put the keep items and take the donate pile to an organization who will distribute them to people who need them.

For the sell pile you can either have a yard sale or if that’s not possible you can put an ad in the paper or sell them at an online auction place. You can try Craigslist too.

Once you get all your clutter cleaned out you’ll feel so much better about your space and be able to use your closets for the use they were intended such as hanging clothes in them.

Storage and more storage

My brother-in-law added more storage to his garage. He bought a small trailer that he put right in front of the back door of the garage. He has 3 other sheds in the yard already but they are filled with painting supplies, swimming pool supplies (but no swimming pool) and all kinds of other stuff.

I think it’s time for him to go through all of the sheds and do some purging instead of adding more places to store things. He has a riding lawnmower that sits outside in all kinds of weather because there is no place to put it so it’s covered. He has lots of ladders and other stuff behind sheds & up against the side of the garage too.

Speaking of….

Speaking of food storage… don’t forget about your pets and their food. You can get all kinds of storage containers for everything from pet food to their pet supplies including treats, collars, leashes, brushes, etc. A good storage container for pet food will keep the food fresh and dry and also keep out bugs. It will keep your pet out of the food and he/she will only eat the food that is placed in their bowls.

I used to buy 20lb bags of food for our dog and he would always help himself in between feedings. We moved the food someplace where he couldn’t get into it whenever he wanted. I never thought, at the time, to put it in a covered plastic bin. That would have been the best thing to do.

Cupboard tips

A good thing to use in your kitchen cupboards are glass jars or canisters to keep your pasta in after you have opened the box. You can also use them for beans, flour, sugar, etc. Be sure to use some Primera labels on the jars so you know what’s in them. That also makes the cupboards look nice, neat and organized inside.

Those jars will also help keep out bugs and pests. You could even keep candy in them to help keep them fresh. Jars come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. You can get stackable ones, fluted ones, fancy ones.. whatever kind that strikes your fancy.

Baskets

I love baskets, those wicker ones, because you can use them for so many things. Put one in your bathroom with guest towels rolled up, some guest soaps, shampoo, conditioner, and wash clothes for when you have guests. You can use them in cubbys to put books, papers, toys, craft items and just about anything you want to keep out of sight. They’re great in the laundry room too to hide your detergents and fabric softeners too. They also are great for making your own gift baskets for new moms, holidays and anything thing else you can think of.

Baskets are not only useful but they’re pretty to look at too. I watch HGTV a lot and I get a lot of ideas from watching those shows. They’re always using baskets for storage.
