Tips

Here are some tips that involve the use of magnets.

Keep a strong magnet on your workbench and if you spill a lot of small items like nails, screws, tacks, washers, etc use the magnet to pick them up quick and easy.

You can use a refrigerator magnet to place over the lock of you car in winter to keep the lock from freezing.

Put a magnet in your desk drawer to keep your paperclips together.

Use a screw to attach a magnet to your broom’s handle and then when you’re done sweeping just hang the broom on the side of your refrigerator between the fridge and the wall.

Macaroni, Cheese & Ham

I made macaroni, cheese & ham for dinner the other night. I don’t know if anyone in a health care career would consider this heart healthy but it was really good.

2 cups pasta cooked and drained
4 tbsp. butter
4 tbsp. flour
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp. salt
2 cups cooked ham cut into small cubes
1 3/4 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
2 tbsp. dry bread crumbs
2 tbsp. melted butter

Melt butter in a small saucepan. Add flour and cook, stirring until the the mixture foams. Add the milk all at once and stir until the sauce thickens into a smooth cream. Add the salt and simmer over very low heat for about 2 minutes.

Pour the sauce into a large mixing bowl (I used the the pan I cooked the pasta in) and stir in the pasta, ham, 1 1/2 cups of the cheese and mix together.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Lightly butter a 3 quart casserole. Spoon in the macaroni mixture and spread the bread crumbs that have been mixed with the remaining cheese and melted butter evenly over the top. If you use a different sized dish, as I did, you may have to make a larger batch of the breadcrumb mixture. Bake in the oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until the cheese and bread crumb topping is lightly browned.

Makes about 6 servings.

A lot of time on my hands

Looks like I’m going to have a lot of time on my hands. I don’t mean a Patek Philippe watch either. I may not be called back to my job this season so I’ll have a lot of time to do organizing and stuff.

You can read why at ArmyMom. So I can get my closets cleaned out and organized (not that they don’t need it!). I can spend more time baking and more time on my poor neglected blogs. Can you believe that I haven’t even changed any of the themes in, at least, 3 months? I’m always changing themes. There have been times that I’ve changed a theme a couple times in 1 day.

I’ll just have to remember to take before and after pictures of my organizing so I have something to post about.

Tip

Use rubber gloves when cleaning. I must remember this tip myself. I keep forgetting to use them and my hands get so dry, cracked, red and sore.

I heard another use for rubber gloves on TV awhile ago. I forget which show I was watching but they said to cover your hands in hand lotion, put on your rubber gloves and wash a sink full of dishes in the hottest water you can stand. When you’re done wipe off any excess lotion and your hands should be soft as a baby’s bottom.

I haven’t tried it.. I have a dishwasher. Maybe I should wash some by hand and give it a try.

What’s for dinner tonight?

Yesterday I bought 4 nice pork chops and have been thinking of a different way to make them other than throwing them in the frying pan. I was looking at recipes online and came up with one of my own… no cheap travel insurance needed.

I took about a half bottle of barbecue sauce and added some ketchup, brown sugar and a little water and mixed them in a bowl. I poured some of the mixture into the bottom of my slow cooker and laid the 4 pork chops on top. Then I sprinkled some salt and pepper on the chops then poured the rest of the mixture on top.

I set the slow cooker on high and will cook them for 3 or 4 hours then turn it to keep warm until hubby gets home. We will also be having some mashed potatoes and veggies along with it. They are already starting to smell real good!

My lasagna

dsc01563Last weekend I made my famous lasagna. It turned out so good that I was wondering if there is a franchise opportunity anywhere for this kind of thing.

Anyway.. here is how I make mine.

1 box of pre-cooked lasagna noodles
1 jar sauce
1 lb hamburger meat
onion
garlic
Parmesan cheese
shredded mozzarella cheese

Put a little olive oil in a frying pan and saute the onions and garlic. Then add the hamburger and cook until browned. Add the jar of sauce and stir until just heated.

I use an oblong glass baking dish and put in a little of the sauce/hamburger mixture and spread it evenly in the bottom of the dish. Then take 3 lasagna noodles and place 1 crossways and the other 2 lengthwise next to each other. Do another layer of sauce/hamburger mixture then sprinkle with the Parmesan cheese and a couple handfuls of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Do another layer of the noodles opposite the way you placed the first ones. (put the crossways one across the lengthwise ones). Do another layer of the sauce/hamburger mixture. Do another layer of the cheeses. Repeat the noodle, sauce/hamburger mixture and cheeses once more.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Let stand for about 5 minutes and serve.

Shopping

selfcheckoutThe store that I do my grocery shopping has several self-checkout lanes. I use them all the time and their POS system works great. I had been to another grocery store with the self-checkout but that store had a lot of problems with theirs.

I like to use self-checkout because it’s faster, you don’t have to deal with incompetent cashiers and there is always someone nearby I do have a problem with checking out.

What do you think? Do you use the self-checkout or do you stand in the long lines waiting for a cashier to check you out? Why?
