How to prepare an item for shipping

Get your packing supplies such as crumpled newspaper, bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, plain paper, packing tape, masking tape, cardboard egg cartons, foam, sharpie and shipping boxes together first. This will save you time once you get started.

If you are sending a jar or vase, fill it with peanuts, foam or tightly wadded paper.

Wrap it in plain paper first. Never use newspaper as ink could leave stains.

Wrap the lid and base separately in bubble wrap and use masking tape to secure bubble wrap.

Use pieces of cardboard to create a box-like enclosure for each piece of the item or use a separate box.

Fill the spaces around each piece with tightly crumpled paper or peanuts and seal with masking tape.

Put both small boxes into larger box, fill empty space around boxes with more packing, such as crumpled paper, cardboard egg cartons, Styrofoam pieces, peanuts, etc.

Other items that can be used for cushioning include 2 liter plastic bottles (make sure they’re clean) for stability and Styrofoam egg cartons cushioning the top or bottom of box. Rigid Styrofoam can also be wedged in for protection.

Put a card with recipient’s address inside box in case the address on the outside is destroyed.

Seal the box with heavy duty packing tape.

Use black marker to put address on box. You might also want to mark fragile and this way up if applicable.

Hannah

Yesterday Tropical Storm Hannah came ashore in the Carolinas. My son lived in Myrtle Beach and he said it wasn’t bad at all. He won’t need to use his NC health insurance.. thank goodness. Hannah continued up the east coast and by the time she arrived in our area we some high, but not real bad, winds and some very heavy downpours.

Driving around today I really didn’t see much in the way of damage. There were a few small limbs down here and there but nothing major. We had a lot more damage from Gloria back in 1985. There were quite a few trees down in the neighborhood and we ended up with water in the basement. Our electric went out for hours then and it didn’t even flicker this time. With Gloria we had lots of thunder and lightning.. this time there was only a rumble or two of thunder.

Musical cleaning

How to clean wind chimes.

To clean the metal, use WD-40 and a soft rag. Spray the WD-40 on, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and then wipe with a soft rag. It will clean off pollution, salt sea air and spray, sap from trees, bird droppings and acid rain chemicals and make the metal shine.

To care for the wooden parts, moisturize the wood with a periodic coating of exterior wood oil.

To clean glass wind chimes, clean with your normal glass cleaner. I usually spray on the glass cleaner then rinse it off with hot, hot water and let the chimes air dry.

Stains

It’s always tough to get stains out your little one’s clothes. You know, those stains from formula and whatnot that seem to always get trapped in your little one’s best baby clothes?

Here is one way, that I came across, to help remove those stains. Sprinkle a little baking soda on the stain and then pour on a little club soda. It will foam up and you have to let it sit and work for a little bit. Then take an old toothbrush and gently scrub the stain. The stain should loosen up and dissolve then all you have to do is wash it as usual.

Cabbage Soup

This soup is rumored to be a fat burner. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

INGREDIENTS

5 carrots, chopped
3 onions, chopped
2 (16 ounce) cans whole peeled tomatoes, with liquid
1 large head cabbage, chopped
1 (1 ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
1 (15 ounce) can cut green beans, drained
2 quarts tomato juice
2 green bell peppers, diced
10 stalks celery, chopped
1 (14 ounce) can beef broth

Place carrots, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, green beans, peppers, and celery in a large pot. Add onion soup mix, tomato juice, beef broth, and enough water to cover vegetables. Simmer until vegetables are tender. May be stored in the refrigerator for several days.

Spice up your pictures

Are your picture frames dull and boring? They don’t have to be. You can use scrapbook supplies to spice up the photos in your picture frames. You can use foil embossed emblems, small banners, cut outs and other papers. Use alphabet letter stickers, around the actual picture frame, to spell out “Baby’s 1st Birthday”, “Our Wedding”, “Our Anniversary”, etc.

Put the picture in a frame that’s much larger than the picture then use a colored piece of paper as the background then apply stickers, writings, banners, cut-outs and other things to decorate around the picture, across the bottom or top, or down the sides of the photo.

Deal season

It’s been yard sale season and I’ve gone to a couple and found some good deals. People are cleaning out their homes and garages and selling stuff like crazy. One yard sale that I passed even had a bus for sale! How crazy is that? Well, I really can’t say it’s crazy because I had a yard sale once and sold my car. I got a good price for it too.

If you shop around at yard sales you can find some good stuff at cheap prices.
