Portable Greenhouses

If you cannot afford air travel, you don’t need advice from a travel advisor. You can simply travel by train and ship where necessary.

greenhouse If you are looking for some Greenhouses and you only have a small space, you can get portable greenhouses. They are small and easily moved around. The one I’m thinking of has 4 shelves and looks like a baker’s rack. There is a plastic cover that zips open and has roll up panels. That will help regulate the temperature inside so your seedlings will grow properly.

After the seedlings have grown you can take the cover off and use the stand to keep your potted plants on. It’s a versatile and very handy shelving unit.

More Kitchen Myths

Lobsters scream with pain when boiled False

This one is false on two counts. First of all, pain doesn’t just happen automatically – it is the result of specific receptors, nerve pathways, and brain regions all cooperating to convert certain physical stimuli into the perception of pain. Lobsters and other crustaceans are not vertebrates and simply do not have these nerve pathways and brain regions (they don’t have a real brain at all).

The “scream” that lobsters sometime emit when dropped in the boiling water? Lobsters have no throat, no vocal cords, no lungs, so they cannot scream. The noise is caused by air trapped in the shell. When heated it expands and forces itself out through small gaps, causing the sound.

Hot pan, cold oil False

Many people say this the best way to prevent food from sticking to the pan when sautéing or stir frying. The idea is that you heat up the pan first then add the cold oil and almost immediately add the food. This works of course, so it is not a myth in that it is untrue. It is false to think that this is the only way to prevent sticking. What you really have to have is “hot pan, hot oil”. That’s what you are actually getting because the cold oil heats up almost instantly when added to the hot pan. You’ll get the same results if you heat the oil along with the pan rather than adding the oil at the last minute.

Baby Clothes

As you know, I became a Gramma again, for the 4th time, in April. I’ve been shopping around for some baby clothes for the new little one. I’ve found the cutest things at Baby CZ.

This site has been featured in a lot of women’s magazines and has upscale clothing. There is also a gift registry. Get a nice cashmere layette gift set. Cashmere is so soft next to a baby’s skin. They also have clothing for kids 2 – 12 and for adults.

My new little guy will look so cute in these clothes. I’ll have to order something for him so mom and dad can dress him in those clothes for his visit here next month.

My Next Project

My spare bedroom is bad need of organizing. I have boxes of my daughter’s things stored in there for her. I need to straighten out the closet then maybe I’ll be able to put those boxes in there and get it looking like a bedroom again.

Curtains

Curtains If you are planning on buying new curtains here are some tips to consider before you buy.

When measuring the width, measure from the outside of the molding (not the glass), unless window treatment is inside molding. The curtains you buy should be 1 1/2 – 2 times this measurement, depending on the style of curtain. When measuring for length, measure from the top of molding (not the glass), or top of rod, if rods are already in place, to the point where you want the bottom of your curtain to be.

Follow these tips and you will have a beautifully dressed window.
