Garbage Disposal Tips

To really help clean out your garbage disposal, throw in some ice cubes and let it run for a bit. The ice will break up clean those areas that you cant reach with your hands. Mix in some lime and lemon wedges and rock salt too and your garbage disposal will get a thorough cleaning. After a couple minutes, run some cold water down the drain and then slowly alternate to hot water. This will dissolve the ice and salt and help to sanitize it.

Throw in fresh (or even the “not so fresh” kind) lime and lemon wedges which will help to give your disposal a fresh citrus scent.

Avoid pouring grease or cooking oils down the drain. Grease and oil should be disposed of in some other manner, because even small quantities can accumulate in your drain and cause problems. Also, don’t run your garbage disposal without also running cold water.

Grinding small bones and egg shells helps clean the disposal by scraping away stubborn deposits or citric acid and pulp.

If your dishwasher drains through your garbage disposal, switch it on when the hot soapy water is running through is so it gets a good cleaning.

DON’T use hot water when grinding food waste. However, hot water can be drained into a disposal between grinding periods.

DON’T turn off the motor or water until grinding stops and only a motor and water sound is heard.

DON’T grind extremely fibrous material like corn husks or artichokes.

DON’T dispose of coffee grounds.
